After camping out under the stars by a cattle farm, I rode 36.67 miles today to arrive in Silver City, NM. The headwind on the high desert continued to sap my strength as it slowed me to a near crawl climbing the hills. The sunrise was amazing as you can see:
After significant climbing with numerous false summits, I did my first crossing of the Continental Divide:
It is shocking to me the variety in the terrain and the plant life that seems to change every dozen miles or so. Scrub bushes, barren areas, rocky soil, shrubbery, and then the return of trees as I pedal and clim higher into the Gila National Forest. I come to appreciate more and more the value of our national parks and look forward to exploring more.
I am looking forward to sleeping indoors tonight and cleaning up after a couple of tough days of wind, sand storms, heat, sun, dehydration, steady inclines, and rough road conditions. All things that build character, I know.
